Abstract

This program combines psychological and neurophysiological research into human cognitive functions such as perception, memory, and language. The purpose of both research approaches is the same: to gather as much knowledge of human brain function as possible. Only the research methods differ. The psychologist asks people to perform on laboratory tasks, and studies variables such as reaction time or accuracy. The neurophysiologist, on the other hand, attempts to measure directly what goes on in the brain, both in normal healthy people and in patients with specific brain damage. This type of combined research, which has become known as 'cognitive neuroscience', has been rapidly expanding world-wide in the last decade.
