Abstract

Children with Down syndrome have an increased risk for the development of respiratory tract infections. The objective of this study is to investigate which inflammatory mediators are of importance in host defence against respiratory pathogens in these children. At this moment approximately 80 children with Down syndrome and their siblings have been included in our study. Whole blood stimulation (in vitro) with LPS, S. pneumoniae , and influenzae has been performed. Various pro-and anti-inflammatory mediators will be measured by Elisa.
