| The Pore/Grain Scale Modelling programme researches the flow of fluids, such as water and oil, in the Earth by zooming in on the properties of the pores and grains of Earth layers. The keyword in this research programme is upscaling . Studying the behaviour of individual pores and grains is not sufficient in this case. Pores and grains are 1 to 1,000 micrometre in size. This scale is too small to measure the behaviour of the material as a whole. It also presents practical difficulties: just try studying each individual sand grain on a beach. For this reason, the average behaviour is described. By calculating the average behaviour of the pores and grains, it is possible to predict how pores and grains will behave on a larger scale. |
