| The shallow subsurface programme is dedicated to exploring the shallow subsurface of the Earth down to a maximum depth of 200 metres. Objective: to advance towards a better understanding of the composition and behaviour of these upper layers of the Earth. This programme comprises work on civil engineering subjects in and with the ground: building excavations, foundations for buildings, bridges, off-shore constructions, water defences and tunnels. Researchers in this programma also look into the flows of groundwater and environment protection management. Research into the shallow subsurface is necessary because the subsurface determines how safely and healthily we build and live. |
