Abstract

The strategic R&D approach of the ART-A program has been described in detail in paragraph 7a, Application Form A. The second phase of the strategic R&D approach addresses the interpretation of sequencing results and its implementation (project 3). Project 3 builds upon the findings from the project 1 and 2. Project 3 focuses mainly on the interpretation of genotypic sequences and the optimization of the interpretation system among non-B subtypes by phenotypic comparison of resistance using B type and C type reference viruses. The virco genotyping and phenotyping interpretation protocols will be used as a starting point. Technology transfer will consist of transferring the existing and optimized Virco interpretation systems that result from this study to Africa, including PhD training (description in project 4). Effective implementation of the technology will be achieved through the Training Work Package (project 4). Virco is the project coordinator.
