Research objectives: The ComfortClass principle comprises a husbandry system in which the animals are kept according to their behavioural / physiological needs. The principle is tested in a specifically designed facility. During the years 2006 2008, the welfare claim is tested. Also, some specific questions are addressed. Simple knowledge gaps are to be tested at farms that are adopting the concept (from 2008 onwards). Complex and unpractical questions are addressed in the mentioned facility. This research is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.
In 2007 and 2008, especially space requirement and the need for improved lying comfort are tested. Also, rooting equipment is tested.
Results and products: Results are communicated to both the pig sector and the public. For this, the media are intensively involved. Also, it is aimed that the essentials are published in the regular scientific media.
The project is owned and led by a consortium chaired by the major Dutch farmers organisation (LTO) and the major Dutch animal protection organization (Dierenbescherming), in close collaboration with Wageningen University and Research Centre. |
