| The aim of the project is to give a cross-linguistic overview of the semantic and morpho-syntactic properties of the constituents of the noun phrase in the indigenous languages of South America. The languages of South America with their enormous genetic diversity (over a hundred language families) offer rich material for typological studies. For instance, it is still to be investigated whether alleged typological universals stand up when systematically confronted with the South American data. Being particularly interested in areal linguistics, I am fascinated to see whether and to what extent areally determined structural patterns are present on the South American continent. |
