The major goals of this project are: 1. To identify reliable genetic or biomarkers that are associated with subgroups of MS patients, disease progression or susceptibility for MS, or that are related to therapeutic response, and to validate these observations by findings in functional studies. As a first step, I will focus on the relation between the T-cell expression of peroxisome proliferator-acitivated receptor (PPAR)? and gender differences in susceptibility for MS. The experimental findings of PPAR? and MS will be confirmed in the GeneMSA project, - a large well-designed MS cohort. . 2. To extend the approach as described with PPAR? and MS, to other markers. Marker selection will be based on findings in whole genome association studies of SNPs, CNVs, or other genetic variants that are associated with MS, expected to be forthcoming.
