The project concerns a five-year programme (2008-2013) to establish a sign language corpus in the School of Modern Languages (Heriot-Watt), containing sign language samples from students on British Sign Language courses and British Sign Language/English Interpreting courses. Data elicitation is through course-work and the technical platform is ELAN, a multimedia (time-based) media annotator. The corpus will provide an evidence-base for developing a new generation of sign language curricula, will be used to conduct research into error patterns among sign language learners, facilitate comparative sign linguistic analysis on native vs. learners' production of sign language, and enable empirical research on English into BSL translation.
