| Scientific highlight of 2006 was the two papers published in Critical Care Medicine, the first entitled 'Predisposing factors for hypoglycemia in the intensive care unit' and the second 'Evaluation of short-term consequences of hypoglycemia in an intensive care unit'. With the widespread implementation of tight glycemic control in intensive care units, hypoglyemia is seen much more frequently. These two papers, first authored by Titia M. Vriesendorp who obtained her PhD in early 2007, were the first systematic studies on hypoglycemia in the intensive care unit. The key take home message, that hypoglycemia seems to be a marker of mortality without evident causal relationship to death, received widespread attention in the intensive care world. |
