Abstract

Paleomagnetism is integrated in a wide variety of Eart scientific disciplines involving, for instance, tectonics, dating, and properties of the geomagnetic field. In addition, there is a strong rock magnetic context (see Program C, Dekkers). Aim: Application and integration of paleomagnetism in Earth sciences Methods: Application of paleomagnetic and rock magnetic methods in a context of multidisciplinary studies: tectonics, sedimentology, structural geology, (geo)chemistry, soil science, geomagnetic (geodynamo) theory, stratigraphy & paleontology, archeology, physical geography, paleoclimatology & paleoenvironment, environmental magnetism, etc. Present topics: Current research is embedded in a number of projects. Prof. Dr. Langereis is responsible for the following projects: tectonics, late Neogene basin development in the Medite Mediterranean (post-doc Krijgsman and PhD van Assen), rift related extensional tectonics in a flood basalts setting in Ethiopia (with Universities of Pisa & Firenze, Italy), early plate tectonics in the Archean of Australia and South Africa (PhD Strik); magneto(cyclo)stratigraphy and astronomical time scales scales, with an emphasis on marine and continental sequences in the Mediterranean (post-doc Krijgsman) and on the loess-ocean connection (post-doc Heslop). A strong cooperation exists with similar project in continental deposits of Spain (PhD Abdul Aziz, IPPU) and the Parathethys (PhD Snel, IPPU); properties of the geomagnetic field, paleosecular variat variation during a geomagnetic superchron (PhD Kruiver). Environmental magnetism is studied, e.g. in NITG projects in the Netherlands.
