Abstract

Geophysics is physics applied to an understanding of the processes in the Earth. The latter operate at spatio-temporal scales that vary over several orders of magnitude. The applicability of the theory and the modifications necessary under the different scenarios is an important issue.Insufficient amount of data and the unavoidable presence of noise gives rise to a parallel - fundamental - question: the type of information that can be inferred about the Earth from geophysical observations. Multi-channel reflection seismics is the most accurate technique to gather such information short of direct sampling. Aim: Investigate/improve the seismic methodology by applying to very shallow known structures. Obtain better images of lower crust and upper mantle to better constrain their evolution. Methods: Multi-component seismics, VSP, (joint) inversion, computer simulations. Present topics: Extracting stochastic wave-propagation parameters from deep reflection seismic data. Structural inversion of geophysical observations.
