Abstract

Context, aims: The central theme of this project is the role of magmatic systems in the exchange of material between the mantle, the Earth?s surface and the atmosphere. Current research activities concentrate on active volcanoes in subduction settings aiming at (1) magma-genetic processes near the slab-wedge interface and evolution en route to the surface; (2) volatile elements in relation to eruptive behavior, and assessment of volcanic fluxes to the hydrosphere and atmosphere. (3) crater lakes and near-surface magmatic/hydrothermal systems as accumulation and dispersal systems of environmentally sensitive elements. These issues thus combine fundamental and applied research objectives: tectonic recycling, evolution of crust-lithosphere system, volcanogenic pollution and hazard mitigation in high-risk areas. Field activities are concentrated in SE Asia, in particular the Sunda-Banda Arc and the N. Sulawesi-Sangihe Arc in the Indonesian region. A significant part of the project is carried out within the framework of formal cooperation between UU (Faculty of Earth Sciences) and DGGMR (Volcanological Survey of Indonesia). Geochemical and petrological data on erupted material, hydrothermal and surface waters are the main source of information. Chemical and isotopic compositions are obtained from a range of techniques (e.g., XRF, EPMA, ICP, stable and radiogenic isotope MS), partly through collaboration with outside partners. The successful development of our LAM-ICP-MS instrument allows us to set new targets in various research fields that require high-quality data on trace element and isotopic signatures of fluids and solids from volcanic and other sources. Duration: Long term, 1995 - Researchers: Dr. M.J. van Bergen, Dr. P.R.D. Mason, Drs. J.C.M. de Hoog, J.
