Changes in vertical stratification and their impact on phytoplankton communities (STRATIPHYT), SUB 4

This subproject aims at a better understanding and prediction of the changes in species composition of phytoplankton communities of the Atlantic Ocean in response to global warming. For this purpose, we will develop a family of phytoplankton community models (ranging from simple generic models to more complex realistic models). The input and validation of these models will be provided by data available in the literature and generated by the other subprojects within this research proposal. Our model study will focus on: (1) seasonal changes in vertical stratification and phytoplankton species composition (2) latitudinal changes in vertical stratification and phytoplankton species composition along a North-South gradient (3) prediction of long-term trends in vertical stratification and phytoplankton species composition in response to climate change The proposed research project is clearly relevant for the ocean theme of NWO's research program. It aims to increase our understanding of the impacts of climate change on the primary production and plankton species composition of one of the most productive parts of the world's ocean.
