Abstract

My research is part of the NWO funded project Islam and the performing arts in the Middle East and Europe: from cultural heritage to cultural citizenship. This project focuses on new discourses and practices in Western Europe and the Middle East in which Islam and the performing arts are creatively merged. Where my colleague Yolanda van Tilborgh will be looking at art productions taking place in Western Europe, I will be studying developments and trends in the Middle East, in particular Egypt and Morocco. This subproject will revolve around new genres of Islamic performing art productions in the Middle East, the way they are connected to new waves of piety and the reception of these art projects by various publics. It will provide an ethnographic account of the emerging Islamic cultural sphere in the countries to be studied. Within this framework I have chosen to focus on youth cultures and trends in music emerging in Egypt and Morocco.
