Abstract

This study examines the behaviours that characterize management in small business and how those behaviours in turn, relate to growth performance. The research will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase, an application of Mintzberg s structured observation technique will be used to compare and contrast the day-to-day behaviours of novice versus habitual (repeat) entrepreneurs as well as the behaviours of managers (of both types) in start-up versus established small to medium sized firms. In a follow-up phase, quantitative survey techniques will be used to test hypotheses regarding the relationship between these behaviours and firm performance, including growth.
