Abstract

The program consists of three projects. The first project deals with the difficult task of finding the optimal observation network for climate studies. To this end a large number of model runs is performed to obtain a representation of the probability density of the model. Using the relative entropy when observations are included via Bayes theorem, the optimal observation network can be determined. In the second project the distribution of Indian Ocean heat and salt over the Atlantic Ocean and the Southern Oceans is determined in a high-resolution present-day run. These results will by used in future runs to try to explain the antiphase relation in glacial periods between the northern and the southern hemisphere. In the third project a data-assimilation scheme for the global ocean is build that will be used in a 120-year reanalysis project next year. This system will allow the IMAU-researchers also to perform extra assimilation runs in localized areas, especially around South Africa and in the Indian Ocean.
