Samenvatting (EN)

The Netherlands are a trading nation. Being able to deal with cultural diffeences is vital for out economic success. Trust is a big issue in international trade, and cultural misunderstandings can lead to trust breakdowns. This study aims at modeling culture in trade networks using agent-based models. Agents are given a synthetic culture that they use for deciding with whom to trade, whether to take quality risks, and whether to act in a trustowrhy manner. These models allow to represent the decisionmaking behaviours of individual traders as well as observing their effect at the level of the system. The knowledge gained can be put to use in understanding the dynamics of international trade patterns, and particularly of trust breakdowns.
