Description: Ensuring the effective coordination of the various projects is accomplished by making it possible for projects which receive funding to make use of generic tools developed in other projects within this theme, in the same year or previous years. More specifically, this means that the use of OpenMI (http://www.openmi.org/) is encouraged for linking models. In addition, the use of ontologies is encouraged. In some cases, development work is also carried out on generic instruments, tools etc. In such cases, funding is transferred to the project most suited for carrying out these development activities. In all cases, this project is one which already receives funding based on KB theme 1.6.
Research objectives: The goal of this project is to ensure the effective coordination of the various projects which are eligible for funding on the basis of theme 1.6, Wageningen Systems.
Results and products: The use of OpenMI has become generally accepted in projects where model linkage is an issue. As a result of the active role played by Alterra in this regard, we have also developed an enviable reputation when it comes to providing the necessary knowledge and assistance in this area. Alterra has been involved in the development of the OpenMI standard since 2005. Alterra s role became increasingly important in 2007 and 2008 in particular, as it took the lead in the development of the Java implementation of the OpenMI standard. Alterra does this work in its role as a member of the OpenMI Technical Committee, which reports to the international umbrella organisation known as the OpenMI Association. The latter has members from various European countries. As everything is made available in Open Source format, other interested parties can also make use of the software and knowledge developed within this framework. |
