Description: Alterra s main role in EFORWOOD (38 partner organizations from 21 countries) is two fold:
1. improving knowledge, methods and tools to assess the sustainability of forests and raw material production in the context of present and future Forest Wood Chains (FWC) 2. design, implement and test a software framework to support a Sustainability Impact Assessment targeted at policy developers/evaluators and the FWC industry.
Research objectives: The aim of the project is to provide methods and tools that will integrate Sustainability Impact Assessment of the whole European Forestry-Wood Chain (FWC), by quantifying performance of FWC, using indicators for all three pillars of sustainability; environmental, economic and societal.
Results and products: The Decision Support Tool ToSIA (Tool for Sustainability Impact Assessment) is the predominant product of EFORWOOD. It represents a dynamic sustainability impact assessment model that is analysing environmental, economic, and social impacts of changes in forestry-wood production chains, using a consistent and harmonised framework from the forest to the end-of-life of final products. |
