Doel
De belangrijkste rol die Alterra vervult voor EFORWOOD (38 partnerorganisaties uit 21 landen) is tweeledig:

1. verbetering van kennis, methoden en instrumenten voor de beoordeling van de duurzaamheid van bossen en de productie van grondstoffen binnen de context van huidige en toekomstige Forest Wood Chains (FWC).
2. ontwikkeling, implementatie en testen van een softwareraamwerk ter ondersteuning van een duurzaamheidseffectbeoordeling gericht op beleidsmakers/ontwikkelaars en de FWC-industrie.

Werkwijze
Het project is erop gericht methoden en tools aan te reiken die Sustainability Impact Assessment van de volledige European Forestry-Wood Chain (FWC) integreren door de prestaties van FWC te kwantificeren waarbij indicatoren worden gebruikt voor de drie pilaren van duurzaamheid: milieutechnisch, economisch en sociaal.

Resultaten
De Decision Support Tool ToSIA (Tool for Sustainability Impact Assessment) is de belangrijkste uitkomst van EFORWOOD. Het vertegenwoordigt een dynamisch beoordelingsmodel voor duurzaamheidseffecten waarmee milieu-, economische en sociale effecten van veranderingen in de bosbouw, houtteelt en houtindustrie worden geanalyseerd door gebruikmaking van een consistent en geharmoniseerd raamwerk van het bos tot het einde van de levensduur van eindproducten.

Description:
Alterra s main role in EFORWOOD (38 partner organizations from 21 countries) is two fold:

1. improving knowledge, methods and tools to assess the sustainability of forests and raw material production in the context of present and future Forest Wood Chains (FWC)
2. design, implement and test a software framework to support a Sustainability Impact Assessment targeted at policy developers/evaluators and the FWC industry.

Research objectives:
The aim of the project is to provide methods and tools that will integrate Sustainability Impact Assessment of the whole European Forestry-Wood Chain (FWC), by quantifying performance of FWC, using indicators for all three pillars of sustainability; environmental, economic and societal.

Results and products:
The Decision Support Tool ToSIA (Tool for Sustainability Impact Assessment) is the predominant product of EFORWOOD. It represents a dynamic sustainability impact assessment model that is analysing environmental, economic, and social impacts of changes in forestry-wood production chains, using a consistent and harmonised framework from the forest to the end-of-life of final products.
