Patients with spinal cord injury can partially or entirely loose the ability to move their legs. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the leg muscles can enable these patients to move the paralyzed legs again. Furthermore, therapy in which this FES is applied can be beneficial in rehabilitation of gait. The purpose of this project is to use brain activity (EEG signals) to control this electrical stimulation. The computer technology that is necessary for this is called Brain Computer Interfacing (BCI). This is a technology that transfers the brain activity into useful signals for driving the simulation device. The brain activity that will be used is activity that is generated by imagination of locomotion movements. In this way the coupling of brain activity and the movement of the legs, which is lost in these patients, will re-established.
