Abstract

The success of conservation programs critically depends on a clear definition of conservation objectives and on the availability of suitable tools to implement conservation programs. The recent availability of dense marker maps for livestock species enables the evaluation of diversity for specific regions of the genome, and to localise genetic diversity for specific traits to different regions in the genome.

The main question in the project is: how is genetic variation of functional traits distributed across the genome? This project has the general objective of exploring the opportunities of dense marker maps for conservation of genetic diversity within livestock breeds.
