Abstract

The Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, is an important fish species for Vietnam. Most breeding programs for fish are based on sophisticated livestock breeding technology. These breeding programs are difficult to implement by local breeders. The problem to be addressed in this project is: given the restrictions of natural mating and the fact that individual fry cannot be identified, how should a simple sustainable breeding scheme for tilapia be organised? We will design a rotational cohort scheme and compare this with a breeding program which is based on BLUP selection and controlled matings.
