| Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) is a frequently occurring phenomenon during abdominal and thoracic vascular surgery, small bowel transplantation, hemorrhagic shock, and surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass, carrying high morbidity and mortality. Although intestinal IR has extensively been studied in animal models, the consequences of human intestinal IR remain to be investigated. Improved knowledge on human intestinal IR is important to develop preventive and therapeutic strategies to improve intestinal IR-associated morbidity and mortality. Aim The aim of this research project is to investigate the consequences of human intestinal IR and to characterize intestinal IR induced inflammatory responses in man. |
