Description: The largest part of the planet is covered with oceans, and the majority of the worlds human population lives in areas adjacent to the marine environment. Even though marine production has hardly been developed. Present marine products are a result from hunting or catching practices, with marginal management practices to increase production. New means of production in the marine environment are needed to on the one hand meet the increasing demand for marine products, but on the other hand also to increase overall food production without further increasing the negative impact on the worlds environment and natural resources.
Research objectives: The objective of this project is to develop a knowledge base for strategic choices for the realization of sustainable marine production. With literature reviews, data analysis, modeling, stakeholder interviews and workshop we develop a vision on how sustainable marine production can be realized. In first instance the research will focus on the biological aspects of production, food webs analysis and productivity on the basis of modeling and research of production systems. The various scenarios for production systems will be compared using SWOT analysis, whilst the most promising scenario will be further developed.
Results and products: The project results in knowledge on the potential of the various marine production systems, resulting in a green paper for strategic choices. |
