Description: Both newborn and weaned piglet mortality in organic pig husbandry is high compared to conventional pig farms. Especially maternal behaviour and contact with an outdoor run and pasture can result in an improvement. The control treatment is always close to conventional systems to promote interaction between organic and conventional pig husbandry.
Research objectives: The objective is to reduce piglet mortality by:
- improve maternal behaviour by rearing gilts in a more complex environment - improve health status of weaned piglets by giving them access to pasture during lactation
Results and products: The project results in direct advices to practical pig farmers to reduce piglet mortality. Both in a specific flyer, web publications, oral presentations and demonstrations at the research farm in Raalte. |
