Description: Nowadays most of Dutch forests are regenerated by using natural regeneration. With different measures like making gaps, soil scarification and game protection generally a sufficient number of seedlings can be obtained to develop a new forest generation.
Natural regeneration generally consists of a mixture of different tree species. The numbers of seedlings are often high but with a varying density. Sometimes mixtures appear that we do not even know of plantations. Dutch forest managers have no or little experience with the management of this type of diverse, dense mixtures towards a forest which produces sufficient wood of desired quality while also meeting other goals (nature and recreation).
The question is which (combination of) measures and with what frequency this goal can be achieved in a cost effective way. |
