Abstract

Children of Parents with a Mental Illness (COPMI) are at high risk of developing psychological dysfunctions themselves. Not much is known about the actual identification of the risk and protective factors and about parent-child transmission mechanisms of psychological dysfunctions of COPMI in adolescence. This study will focus on parents with one or more of the three most prevalent psychiatric disorders in adults: depression, anxiety disorder, and/or alcoholism. The study has a three-wave longitudinal design with intervals of 12 months. Questionnaire data will be collected among adolescents, with or without mentally ill parent(s), with an age between 11 and 16 at T1 (13-18 at T3). The recognition of risk and protective factors in adolescence is essential for designing tailored prevention and for the correct assessment and treatment of COPMI.
