| With the rapid economic development of the People s Republic of China (PRC), mass media appear as a very useful tool to promote national identity and image. My research project focuses on the reason why the PRC government promotes national identity, and how it uses mass media events to do so. This project investigates the characteristics of the PRC government s propaganda strategy in the post-reform era from a historical perspective. The research questions are: (1) what are the characteristics of the PRC government s propaganda policy under the administration of Hu Jintao?(2) Are mass media events employed to promote national identity, and if so: what is the motivation of the actors who shape these events? (3) How can we understand the propaganda tactics adopted in such mass media events? (4) What is the audience reception towards such mass media events: how should we evaluate the efficacy of the propaganda tactics? |
