"1. MISSION & VISION: Mission. To create a state-of-the- art, internationally competitive, integrated research and patient care programme that stimulates translational, multidisciplinary research, innh, innovative patient care and excellent education and training with the aim to improve prediction, prognosis and prevention of vascular disease. Vision Preventive interventions and treatment for cardiovascular disease have contributed largely to the increase in lifeexpectancy in the past 50 years. Cardiovascular diseases do, however, still cause an extensive disease burden in The Netherlands and in the world at large. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death for women, and the second most important cause of death for men. Available effective interventions do not always reach the patient at high risk, because there still is insufficient knowledge on etiology, course and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Development of new drugs is hampered by inadequate detection of high risk patients and lack of good indicators to evaluate the effect of treatment. Ageing of the population without further improvement in care and prevention will lead to a further increase in the prevalence of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, adverse trends in major cardiovascular risk factors will increase the prevalence even further. There is a clear need to intensify the research into cardiovascular disease. Circulatory Health will contribute to the reduction of the cardiovascular disease burden in the Netherlands and abroad through: A common research focus on prediction, prognosis and prevention: the added value of Circulatory Health lies in the cross-links that will be created between scientists from the different participating research groups, as well as linkage of research infrastructure (patient cohorts, databases), all with a common research focus. Integration of research and patient care: an integrated programme for research and patient care including the complex patient needing top clinical care to the high-risk patient in primary and secondary care and the general population. Providing optimal clinical care for the cardiovascular patient referred to the UMCU and expert advice to specialist colleagues consulting the UMCU expertise. Integration of state-of-the art therapy of acute clinical presentations of the cardiovascular disease with optimal care to prevent a new or subsequent cardiovascular event. Providing optimal service to patients and health care providers. Creation of an optimal research infrastructure, collaboration with top research groups abroad and multinational imaging and pharmaceutical industry. Creation of an environment that stimulates and attracts top talent in clinical care, pre-clinical and clinical research. Putting global cardiovascular health on the UMCU/UU research agenda. 2.
