Abstract

NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) is a technique which is highly suitable for the distinction of biomolecules. At normal use, the combined sensitivity and resolution limits a broad range of applications. The UltraSense technique combines resolution with a ultra high sensitivity (enlarged by a factor of at least a100 times). This makes UltraSense NMR feasible for a diversity of applications, like the development of new drugs in the pharmaceutical industry, the analysis of digestion and food processing or abnormalities in these processes (such as obesities); and furthermore, the analysis of chemical processes or hormonal pollution of water. The cost of the UltraSense NMR technology is relatively low. Next to the further development of UltraSense NMR in technical specifications and design, the project will develop diagnostic services (screening/ analyses) on its basis, for pharmaceutical and medical applications. The application development will be focused on generating a diagnostic test for early tracing of prostate cancer. Early diagnoses can provide treatments before the cancer reaches its aggressive stage, reducing costs and possibly saving lifes. Considering the prevalence of prostate cancer among elderly men, the early diagnoses, made possible by UltraSense NMR, could create a substantial impact.
